How to Run Android Apps on Your Desktop

Ever feel like running an Android app on your Windows machine? Using BlueStacks, you can easily get apps from your Android device to your desktop or laptop without any complicated set up or fussing with the Android SDK. Android Apps on Windows          BlueStacks is essentially a self-contained virtual machine that runs Android apps on your Windows 7 computer. While it’s still in alpha, it’s surprisingly stable, pretty novel, and constantly improving. It has very little set up and runs quite nicely smoothly, albeit with a few limitations. The biggest appeal is that you don’t have to deal with the Android SDK – or even know what that is, really – and so it’s great for beginners. You can easily install apps available from BlueStacks’s list of free apps, and if you have an Android device, you can install many apps from your device via the Cloud Connect app. Why would anyone want to do this? Well, suppose you have an app that you re...

Apple is replacing first gen iPod nanos due to faulty batteries

After offering to swap out a few faulty first gen iPod nanos in Korea back in 2009, it appears Apple has finally seen fit to get them out of owner's pockets here in the US ( update : worldwide) too. An email just sent to registered owners (included after the break) and notice posted on its replacement program site inform users the affected units were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. If you have one (seriously, yours still works?), stop using it right now and fill out the form at the link below to order a free replacement unit. The main inconvenience -- other than finding out you've been walking around with the possibility of a "rare case" of overheating taking place in your skinny jeans -- is an anticipated six-week lag between Apple receiving the old unit and shipping you out a replacement. The reason given for waiting so long to replace them is that when it comes to this issue "the likelihood increases as the battery ages";...

Find the passwords for nearby WiFi hotspots

You know how it is – you’re desperate to get online in an unfamiliar place but with only secured WiFi hotspots around you. You don’t have their passwords, so what can you do? Foursquare’s tips are often a good way of finding the password for a nearby hotspot, but it’s not very practical to browse through every nearby location until you find one. 4sqwifi is an iPhone app that makes the process much easier. Open the app and it will display a list of nearby Foursquare locations, filtered to only include those that have a WiFi password in their tips. In theory, it’s that simple – open the app, find a nearby venue’s password, and jump online.   There are a few factors that hold the app back from being perfect, but that’s more to do with the data source than anything else. Passwords can change, so the information shared by Foursquare users may not be up to date. However, it’s better to have at least a chance of getting online than none at all, right? Also...

Top 100 videogames of 2011

Anticipation without means, is half the fun or so it seems. While you are now looking forward to a great many games, at the end of 2011 I believe the listed titles are the games you will fondly remember playing. Both logical and indeterminable factors taken into account are: Hype, developer potential, nostalgia, recent critical successes, a series’ past sales and average review scores, all counted towards this unbiased Top 100 of big games you can expect to see in 2011. No doubt one of your favorite games is missing*. I want to emphasize this is not my personal opinion, I’ve had to cut about 100 games from the original overview in editing the past 20 hours. But I’m really happy with how the Top 50 turned out and hope to play half of them (all of us at VGB own all systems). If your favorites aren’t high enough in the list I look forward to seeing what your Top 5 looks like in the comments. Release date are listed behind each game’s systems overview. If you’re looking for...

Top 7 Ways to Avoid Cyber Attacks

Viruses and identity theft are not new issues, but recently, individuals and companies are at a much greater risk as a result of the unanticipated increase in internet and technology use. Follow these tips to protect yourself from such an attack so that you won’t be the next victim. For Example , you receive an email promising a great joke if you open the attachment. You're not sure who sent it but you feel like a laugh and open it anyway. Big mistake. Attackers can break into your computer by sending you an email attachment with malware (malicious software) or downloading malware on to your computer when you open a link on a webpage. They want to use personal and financial details on your computer to steal money, buy things on your credit card or open up bank accounts in your name. Anyone who uses the internet needs to be aware of basic computer security: 1. Don't click the link If you don't know who sent the email, or if it's not a trusted websit...

How to Surf The Internet Without Any Browser

Ever find yourself sitting in front of a computer where Internet Explorer or Firefox was blocked by IT Administrator, and restricted you from installing any software? If that PC is running Windows XP, then there is chance for you to still surf Internet. Just follow these simple steps: 1. Open Calculator, Start> Program Files> Accessories> Calculator or press Windows+R and type ' calc ' in the run box, click OK . 2. In Calculator, go to Help> Help Topics . 3. Right click on the left hand side of the title bar and click on ' Jump to URL '. 4. Type in the URL and make sure include the ' http:// ' at the beginning. Note: Basically what you are looking at is Internet Explorer 6 inside a help window, but this version of program isn’t quite smart as Internet 6. This was tested in Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6 and I’m not sure whether it will works in Internet Explorer 7 installed computer. Do you have questions, comments, o...
