My old tech scribbles - Charvin

Whether you’re typing an email in your browser or writing in a word processor, there are convenient keyboard shortcuts usable in almost every application. You can copy, select, or delete entire words or paragraphs with just a few key presses. Some applications may not support a few of these shortcuts, but most applications support the majority of them. Many are built into the standard text-editing fields on Windows and other operating systems. Working With Words We’re used to the arrow, Backspace, and Delete keys working with a single character at a time. However, we can add the Ctrl key to have them effect entire words or paragraph at the same time. Ctrl+Left Arrow – Move cursor to beginning of previous word. Ctrl+Right Arrow – Move cursor to beginning of next word Ctrl+Backspace – Delete previous word. Ctrl+Delete – Delete next word. Ctrl+Up Arrow – Move cursor to beginning of paragraph. Ctrl+Down Arrow – Move cursor to end of paragraph. Mac Users :...

Web browsers include predefined lists of search engines, but you can easily add your own favorites. Even search engines that don’t offer search plugins can be added with a few tricks, whether you’re using Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox has an easy-to-use extension that can add any search box on the web, while Chrome has some built-in tools. Internet Explorer users have it the hardest, and need to rely on a third-party web form. Mozilla Firefox Here’s how it’s supposed to work on Firefox: You visit a search engine, and use the search box’s menu to add the search engine. However, this only works if the website exposes a search provider. Some search engines don’t. The easiest way to add a custom search engine is with the Add to Search Bar add-on . After installing the add-on and restarting Firefox, you can right-click inside a search form on any page and select Add to Search Bar. Your custom search engine will appear i...

Ever feel like running an Android app on your Windows machine? Using BlueStacks, you can easily get apps from your Android device to your desktop or laptop without any complicated set up or fussing with the Android SDK. Android Apps on Windows          BlueStacks is essentially a self-contained virtual machine that runs Android apps on your Windows 7 computer. While it’s still in alpha, it’s surprisingly stable, pretty novel, and constantly improving. It has very little set up and runs quite nicely smoothly, albeit with a few limitations. The biggest appeal is that you don’t have to deal with the Android SDK – or even know what that is, really – and so it’s great for beginners. You can easily install apps available from BlueStacks’s list of free apps, and if you have an Android device, you can install many apps from your device via the Cloud Connect app. Why would anyone want to do this? Well, suppose you have an app that you re...

After offering to swap out a few faulty first gen iPod nanos in Korea back in 2009, it appears Apple has finally seen fit to get them out of owner's pockets here in the US ( update : worldwide) too. An email just sent to registered owners (included after the break) and notice posted on its replacement program site inform users the affected units were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. If you have one (seriously, yours still works?), stop using it right now and fill out the form at the link below to order a free replacement unit. The main inconvenience -- other than finding out you've been walking around with the possibility of a "rare case" of overheating taking place in your skinny jeans -- is an anticipated six-week lag between Apple receiving the old unit and shipping you out a replacement. The reason given for waiting so long to replace them is that when it comes to this issue "the likelihood increases as the battery ages";...
